I was busily out there, meeting people and enjoying people

Depot Artspace (home of the Cultural Icons initiative) caught up with Genevieve Becroft while filming a segment for NZ Sculpture OnShore, of which Genevieve is founding member, with her long time friend and fellow founder, Lenore Sumpter.

For many years we have admired Genevieve and her immense contribution to arts and culture, especially here on the North Shore, yet she seems to fly under the radar. We felt that a celebration of this remarkable philanthropist and outspoken advocate for the arts was long overdue, so we decided to talk to her on camera.

We begin by hearing from Genevieve and Lenore about how a public sculpture exhibition that started in Genevieve’s garden on the edge of Lake Pupuke would go on to raise over $1.5 million dollars for Women’s Refuge.

Genevieve then goes on to talk about the trials and tribulations experienced in bringing cultural institutions The Pumphouse and The Lakehouse to fruition, her time as city councillor and throws in some great tips on how to be a successful fundraiser.

Watch the full episode to find out more about this ‘ordinary’ woman who kept becoming involved with ‘extraordinary’ things.

The 2018 NZ Sculpture OnShore opens on 3 November – 18 November.
